The Old Craigie On Main Space Explains Kendall Square's Whole Year

September 24, 2026

Something changed on Main Street between Central and Kendall Squares last October, and if you walked past 853 Main without knowing the history, you'd have missed it entirely. The awning came down. A new one went up. No farewell tour, no last-supper reservations list circulating on local group chats. Just Craigie on Main, a long-running, well-known Cambridge restaurant, quietly becoming something else.

That something else is Fallow Kin, and understanding why it opened where it did, and what's opened around it since, tells you more about where Kendall Square is heading than any single review or ranking could.

The Space That Used To Be Craigie On Main

Fallow Kin opened on October 15, 2025, in the space everyone in this neighborhood still calls "the Craigie space" out of habit. The team behind it isn't new to the area. Conor Dennehy and Danielle Ayer, who also run Talulla nearby, teamed up with Marcos Sanchez, formerly of Tasting Counter, Gray's Hall, and Tres Gatos, to build something that carries some of Craigie's DNA without trying to replicate it.

The menu is vegetable-forward rather than strictly vegetarian, built around ingredients from local farms, with meat playing a supporting role instead of headlining the plate. There's a 10-seat chef's counter for a prepaid tasting experience if you want the full production, and a late-night, zero-waste menu if you're just trying to eat something good after 10 p.m. The name itself is a small piece of philosophy: in farming, land left fallow isn't neglected, it's resting so it can produce again. For a space that had one identity for years and needed to become something new, that's a fitting frame.

If Fallow Kin were the only thing that opened on this stretch of Main Street in the past year, it would still be worth writing about. It isn't the only thing.

Three More Openings, Same Stretch Of Main Street

Within ten months of Fallow Kin's debut, three more concepts landed within a few blocks of it, each aimed at a different hour of the day and a different kind of appetite.

Alice & Monarch opened May 8, 2026, at 238 Main Street in Kendall Square proper. It's a dual-concept spot from Daniel Roughan, who also runs Source in Harvard Square: upstairs is Alice, an Italian-Mediterranean dining room with pizza, pasta, and a wine and aperitivo-driven bar program; downstairs is Monarch, an 85-seat dessert and drinks lounge tucked behind portraits of, appropriately, monarchs. It's the kind of layered concept that lets you have a completely different night depending on which staircase you take.

BRED Bar opened July 23, 2026, at 730 Main Street, also in Kendall Square. This one comes from chef Tambo Barrow, who founded BRED in Boston's Lower Mills neighborhood in 2015 after training at Le Cordon Bleu in Cambridge. The Kendall location is the brand's biggest bet yet: a 3,000-square-foot space with a 50-seat dining room and a 30-seat lounge, built around Barrow's maplewood-smoked burgers but expanded into Caribbean and Creole-inspired dishes like jambalaya, smoked steak frites, and chili butter charbroiled oysters. It's also the first BRED location built with a cocktail bar, DJs, and monthly guest-chef collaborations in mind, which tells you this isn't a lunch counter. It's designed for an evening crowd that didn't fully exist here a few years ago.

And in February, Eastern Edge opened as a nine-vendor food hall at 290 Main Street, right on the eastern edge of the MIT campus. It's the fast, communal, everyone-orders-something-different model, and the vendor list leans hard into Cambridge and Greater Boston favorites rather than national chains:

  • Clover, the Cambridge-born vegetarian chain that started as a food truck steps from where the food hall now stands
  • Perillas Korean Kitchen, known for bulgogi beef and spicy pork bibimbap bowls
  • Việt Citron, a Vietnamese spot that started in Burlington before expanding to Somerville's Bow Market and now here
  • Lone Star Taco Stand, the food-hall arm of the full-service Lone Star Taco Bar locations in Allston and Cambridge
  • Fuji Sushi, offering grab-and-go maki and nigiri brought over from the Fuji location down the street in Kendall

Four openings. Four completely different models. All within a ten-month stretch, all within easy walking distance of each other.

What This Actually Means For Kendall Square

Here's the part that's easy to miss if you're just cataloging new restaurants: Kendall Square didn't add four restaurants at random. It replaced one identity with a different one, and the shape of that replacement tells you something specific about how the neighborhood is being used.

Craigie on Main was a destination restaurant. People planned an evening around it, made reservations weeks out, treated it as an occasion. What's replaced it, collectively, is a spread of concepts built for different moments in a single day rather than one big night out: a food hall for a fast lunch between meetings at MIT or a biotech lab, a dessert lounge for a low-key after-dinner stop, a burger bar with DJs for a Thursday night that isn't trying to be fancy, and one genuinely destination-worthy dinner spot in Fallow Kin that still requires planning ahead.

That's a different kind of neighborhood than the one Craigie on Main operated in. Kendall Square has spent years being defined by its daytime economy, the offices, the labs, the lunch rush tied to MIT and the biotech campuses that surround it. What these four openings suggest, especially BRED Bar's built-in lounge and DJ nights and Alice & Monarch's downstairs speakeasy, is that the people who work here during the day are increasingly the same people showing up after 6 p.m. That's not something you'd know from a ranking of best new restaurants. You'd only know it from watching where the money went: not into one more high-end dining room, but into four different ways of extending the evening.

The Farmers Market Won't Be There Much Longer

If you're weighing whether to plan an evening around any of this, there's one thing on the calendar that won't wait indefinitely. The Kendall Square Farmers Market runs Thursdays from noon to 6 p.m. at Henri A. Termeer Square, right in the Canal District, and the Cambridge Office for Tourism lists the 2026 season running through November 9. That still leaves several Thursdays on the calendar, but it's worth building into your routine now rather than assuming it'll still be there in December.

This market has a few details worth knowing if you haven't been. It's set right along the canal, close enough that kayakers occasionally paddle up to shop. Vendors this season have included Spring Brook Farm, Captain Marden's Seafoods, Stillman Quality Meats, Far From the Tree Cider, and Far Out Ice Cream, among others. It's a short walk from the Kendall/MIT T stop, and it's the kind of Thursday-afternoon routine that's easy to let slide until it's gone for the season.

What This Means If You Live Here

None of this requires you to do anything. You don't need to try all four new restaurants this month or race to the farmers market before it closes. But if you've noticed Main Street feeling different lately, busier at odd hours, harder to get a table on a Wednesday, this is why. The neighborhood's food scene stopped being organized around one flagship restaurant and started being organized around a stretch of block that can hold a fast lunch, a late dessert, and a Thursday-night burger all within a few hundred feet of each other.

That's worth knowing whether you've lived here for years or moved in last spring. Kendall Square isn't becoming a different place. It's becoming a place where more hours of the day have somewhere specific to go.

If you're thinking about what a neighborhood like this means for your next move, whether that's buying near it, renting through a season, or figuring out what a Kendall Square address is actually worth right now, Jamie Iacoi has spent years watching Cambridge and the neighborhoods around it change block by block.
